Kiliaen van Rensselaer kocht in 1628 het landgoed Crailo. Hij is beroemd geworden door de stichting van Rensselaerswijck in de omgeving van Nieuw Amsterdam (het huidige New York). Nog steeds herinnert het Fort Crailo in Albany aan de eigenaar van het Gooise landgoed Crailo.

De Crailo State Historic Site (Ft. Crailo) was de thuisbasis van de Hendrick Van Rensselaer familie. Begin 18e eeuw was het de zetel van Manor Hendrick's die een 1500 hectare groot landgoed bezat, in wat nu de stad van Rensselaer genoemd Crailo in de 17e eeuw en Greenbush in de 18e eeuw opgenomen. Vroeg 1663, had het landgoed een kleine fort ter bescherming van de plaatselijke inwoners tegen de maurauding Indianen. In 1675, tijdens de King Philip's War, werd de plaatselijke militie kapitein opgedragen palissaden te installeren rond dit fort.

Er zijn sterke aanwijzingen dat het bestaande gebouw werd versterkt met elf kanonpoorten en omringd met een palissade na een aanval door een Franse en Indiaanse oorlog in mei 1746. Twee van de oorspronkelijke kanonpoorten kunnen bekeken worden door huidige bezoekers op de site.

Ook werden de velden en agrarische gebouwen op Crailo gebruikt ter legering van een deel van de koloniale troepen in 1694 en met tussenpozen bij elke Franse en Indiaanse oorlog. Tijdens de Franse Revolutie, werden militie troepen gelegerd op het terrein van het landgoed in 1775 en 1776. Elke aanvallende expeditie naar Canada werd georganiseerd in het Albany gebied, en dan werden de gronden Van Rensselaer gebruikt als kampementen voor de troepen die daarbij betrokken waren, waaronder Britse stamgasten. "Bij tal van gelegenheden vermaakte , John Van Rensselaer, Hendrick's zoon, de verschillende officieren bij de maaltijden en er werd door de familie gezegd dat de Britse Leger chirurg Richard SHUCKBURGH in 1758 "Yankee Doodle" componeerde op Crailo ter vermaking van de koloniale troepen.

Tijdens de Amerikaanse Revolutie, diende een aantal van de mannelijke leden van deze familie als officieren van de militie en continentale strijdkrachten tegen de Britten. Ook was de vrouw van generaal-majoor Philip Schuyler, Catherine, de dochter van John Van Rensselaer geboren en getogen op Crailo.

Tegenwoordig is Crailo State Historic Site is gelegen op 9 1 / 2 Riverside Avenue in Rensselaer, New York en wordt beheerd door het Bureau van NYS Parken, Recreatie en Historic Preservation als een museum van de koloniale Nederlandse cultuur. Van de bovenste Hudson Valley.Displays zijn artefacten van de archeologische opgravingen bij Fort Oranje (Albany).

The Crailo State Historic Site (Ft. Crailo) is the home of the Hendrick Van Rensselaer family. By the early 18th century it was the seat of Hendrick's manor which included a 1500 acre estate in what is now the city of Rensselaer called Crailo in the 17th century and Greenbush in the 18th century. As early as 1663, the estate had a little fort for the protection of the local inhabitants from maurauding Indians and in 1675 during King Philip's War the local militia captain was instructed to install a palisades around this fort.
There is strong evidence to suggest that the existing building was fortified with eleven gunports and surrounded with a stockade after an attack by a French and Indian war party in May of 1746. Two of the original gunports can be seen by today's visitor to the site.
Also,the fields and farm buildings at Crailo were used to quarter colonial troops as early as 1694 and at intervals during each of the French and Indian wars. During the Revolution, militia troops were encamped on the grounds of the estate in 1775 and 1776. Any time an expedition to attack Canada was organized in the Albany area, these Van Rensselaer lands were used as encampments for the troops involved including British regulars. On numerous occasions, John Van Rensselaer, Hendrick's son, entertained the various officers at meals and it was said by the family that British Army surgeon Richard Shuckburgh in 1758 composed "Yankee Doodle" on the well at Crailo to make fun of the colonial troops.
During the American Revolution, several of the male members of this family served as officers of the militia and continental forces fighting the British. Also, Major General Philip Schuyler's wife, Catherine, the daughter of John Van Rensselaer was born and raised at Crailo.
Today the Crailo State Historic Site is located at 9 1/2 Riverside Avenue in Rensselaer, New York and is operated by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation as a museum of colonial Dutch Culture of the upper Hudson Valley.Displays include artifacts from the archeological excavations at Fort Orange(later Albany).
